Girls Inc. of the Island City could not operate without the hundreds of hours of volunteer service we receive each year from dedicated individuals and community partnerships!

Volunteer Opportunities

Elementary Program Walker and Program Assistant
Weekdays, September through May. Hours: 2:30 -4:30pm (1:30-3:30pm on Wednesdays and other early release days).
This opportunity is ongoing and one of our most important commitments! GIIC needs responsible, caring volunteers (ages 18 and up) to assist our staff with walking our Elementary Girls Program participants (grades 1-5) from their schools to our center at 1724 Santa Clara Avenue. Volunteers then remain on site to assist the GIIC staff in supervising the girls until 4:30pm while they are playing outside or in the homework center. We walk to Maya Lin, Love, and Franklin Elementary schools, walking times vary 15-30 minutes depending on distance (rain or shine). This volunteer opportunity is currently not accepting applications. Please check back later.

GRUFF (Girls Reading to Understanding Furry Friends)
GRUFF is a fun and innovative reading literacy program in partnership with Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter (FAAS). It provides girls the opportunity to practice reading in a non-judgmental environment while helping to socialize shelter animals. Volunteers assist with walking the girls to FAAS. At the shelter, our staff and volunteers supervise the girls while they read to the animals. This program runs every other Monday during the school year (start date TBD). This volunteer opportunity is currently not accepting applications. Please check back later.

Teen Career Workshop Leader
Have some wisdom to impart? Speak to Teen Program participants about your career or life experience, lead them in an activity, teach a skill, or host a field trip at your workplace! Workshop leaders are dance instructors, scientists, athletes, mothers, business women, and thought leaders. If you have a STEM background, please inquire about how you can volunteer during the school year workshops or during the summer for our STEM intensive teen program, Eureka! Register now to be a Teen Career Workshop Leader.

Group Volunteers
Groups and companies can donate a day of service for site beautification, distribution of large mailings, or host an event for our program participants. To register your group, please contact Vania Deonizio at 510.521.1743 ext. 201.

Holiday Sale Volunteers
Volunteers are needed starting in October to prepare for this very rewarding event in November where Elementary Program girls and Alameda Island Kids participants can buy gifts for $1 or less. We need help with these tasks: sort donated items (October/November), set-up of the sale, assist with the children’s shopping experience, help children wrap the gifts purchased, clean-up. Register now to be a Holiday Sale Volunteer.

Women Who Dare Volunteers
Our annual fundraiser held in March honors extraordinary girls and women in our community. We need volunteers to help before, during, and after the event by: serving on a subcommittee, event planning, securing donations for our silent auction and raffle, and by assisting on the event date with set-up, check-in, and clean-up. Planning meetings begin in the fall. Visit our Women Who Dare page to learn more about this event or register now to be a Women Who Dare Volunteer.

Board Committee Members
Serve on the Events or Fund Development Board Committee. Share your expertise or learn more about a specific nonprofit relationship-building strategy. The Events Committee oversees the planning and implementation of internal and external events, including our signature fundraiser, Women Who Dare. The Fund Development Committee initiates and builds relationships with individuals, organizations, and foundations, and raises sustainable funds to build capacity. Community members do not have to be members of the Board to serve. Visit our Board Committees page to learn more about Board Committees or register now to be a Board Committee Member.

Teen Summer Camp Helper
Teenage girls (who have completed freshman year) can obtain their required high school community service hours at GIIC during the summer, assist our program staff with projects such as crafts, snack prep and distribution, and other miscellaneous tasks as needed. Please check back in January 2023 for more information.

Court-Appointed Volunteers
Individuals who need to complete court-ordered community service hours can do so at GIIC. Register now and specify your terms. We will do our best to find the right opportunity.
