Program Information
In the early 1980's, when the need for school age childcare became critical, the Alameda Unified School District asked Girls Incorporated of the Island City (then called the Alameda Girls Club) to provide licensed on-site before and after school child care for children at its elementary schools. Since that time, we have leased space from the Alameda Unified School District and have offered quality child care for K-5th graders for 25 years.
We have an exceptional staff of highly-skilled, multi-cultural professionals who speak a total of seven languages and who have remained with us for an average of 10 years (the normal retention rate for employees in the childcare industry is 3 years.) We maintain safe, quality centers while maintaining the required school age ratio of 14 children to 1 adult.
We celebrated our name change by hosting a "Wave" of lei-cutting parties at each site in September 2007. Peet's Coffee & Tea, Inc., donated refreshments, and dignitaries - including Alameda Mayor Beverly Johnson and Alameda Unified School District School Board President Tracy Jensen - joined our celebrations.
Our palm tree logo was designed by local RK Promotional Advertising, along with our new color of blue staff gear.
We offer our child care service in three ways:
- Daily before and after school care during the school year
- One-time and periodic child care during selected holidays and non-student days
- All day child care at a selected center every summer
